

Out of which, parents’ love… you may not find rival in Mongolian popular folk music. Notably, love is probably universal and one of the greatest themes. Nostalgia of home land, parents, your root, your horse could possibly be reasons of many famous songs in Mongolia. Mongolia’s transition to democracy, its rapid urbanisation is often reflected in the music. Mongolian music scene is thrived by duet singers Javkhlan (now a member of Ikh Khural or Parliament) and Bayasgalan in early 2000 and this dominance lasted for a decade and even more. Many composers, poets and even singers seem to live on their fame and dime without earning the pay that they deserve. On the other hand, it also weakens protection of intellectual rights. State medals and honours were considered as the largest recognition of those talented artists, still the same nowadays in some ways or another. Market relations was new to many and the industry was almost neglected in early 1990’s.

Prior to the transition, music industry was subsidised by the government and composers used to produce their music under guidance of Ministry of Culture. Transition from communism (similar to the current North Korean system) to democracy had domino effect on Mongolia’s music. Music is the universal language between us and others. Thus, we decided to share stories about Mongolian music, history behind it and composers for those who had travelled with us in Mongolia or mighty future visitors. Yet, such introduction to Mongolian music was missing.
